Listeria Risk Prompts Smoked Salmon Recall

Woodsmoke Provisions, LLC is recalling 160 package of its The Fresh Market Signature Collection Atlantic Smoked Salmon in 4-ounce retail packages with lot code 1459/2 over concerns that the recalled salmon has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes pathogen, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced.

The 160 packages of the recalled salmon were distributed and sold only in a limited number of The Fresh Market, Inc. stores located in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee.

The product being recalled was packaged in 4-ounce plastic packages with the specific lot code 1459/2, which was manufactured January 15, 2010. The item UPC code is 737094000370.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall; however, it can take some time for foodborne illness symptoms to manifest.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine inspection by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Consumers who have purchased this product from one of the indicated stores and with lot code 1459/2 should not consume it, and are urged to return the recalled salmon to the place of purchase for a full refund. Listeria pathogen can cause significant illnesses linked to the central nervous system, the developing fetus, and placenta. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis, a potentially fatal foodborne Illness that infects about 2,500 people in the U.S., killing 500 each year.

Listeriosis symptoms are high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, abdominal cramps and pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women are 20 times likelier to be infected and Listeriosis can kill fetuses, prompt premature births, can lead to hearing loss or brain damage in newborns, and can prompt neurological effects and cardio respiratory failure in adults.
